We headed down to the small town where the sheriff’s office for our county is located around 11:30 on Friday. Daniel had to take a long lunch during tax season. A little longer than he thought it would be…
When we got there, someone came to the window and got our information. And 30 minutes later we were heading back home. About 15 miles up the road, I looked at the background check certificates that she had given us. I was concerned about something on them and called our social worker. She picked up the phone right away – this was answered prayer for several reasons. She is usually already on the phone and it goes to voicemail, and I thought she might still be out of town. As she was reassuring me that my concern was easy to fix, I noticed another problem. Uh oh.
There were two places that our names were supposed to be typed on the certificate - in the first paragraph, followed by all of our information and another one in the second paragraph. We both had the same person’s name in the second paragraph – NOT ours. So we grabbed some food, ate in the car and headed back down the road. Thankfully someone was there to fix our problem and was very gracious about it. And we got a reprint fairly quickly.
So our quick trip to the sheriff’s office turned into a 3-hour journey. But I am glad that we got it all taken care of that day. And I am grateful that we noticed the problem halfway back home, instead of later, when it could have been a real problem.
And when I called our social worker, she told us that she had heard from immigration that they had received our application and home study!
